Kalasin: A teacher and a local official have been summonsed to hear theft charges for their alleged involvement in the unlawful withdrawal of funds from a loan granted to another teacher who initially sought their help, leaving the victim 1.6 million baht in debt.
Pol Col Ratchapol Sermsaran, superintendent of Muang Kalasin police station, said the suspects have to report to police for questioning and to acknowledge the charges.
Sumaporn Tanchai, a teacher based in Kuchinarai district, and Thanatchat Chaibang, assistant manager of the municipal office of tambon Huay Pho, face theft charges, he said.
Both were supposed to meet the police today. However, they have reportedly sought a postponement.
The pair were implicated in an alleged scam to steal a loan granted to Yaowalak Phuchum, a teacher in Nong Kung Si district, who sought 2 million baht from the Kalasin teachers' cooperative last year.
According to Ms Yaowalak, she had Ms Sumaporn process the loan application on her behalf and agreed to pay a commission fee.
She claims she was not informed the loan had been granted and never received any money, yet says payment installments were deducted from both her October and November salary.
Ms Yaowalak lodged a complaint with police in Muang district after finding out about the irregularities and brought the matter to the attention of the Damrongdhama Centre.
Police will summon the person at the teachers' cooperative who was allegedly involved in withdrawing the money.
Ms Yaowalak, who yesterday submitted a petition to the provincial police bureau to press them into speeding up their probe, also called on the teachers' cooperative to take responsibility.
