PHUKET – A pre-kindergarten teacher in Patong faces an inquiry after expelling three children for frequent absence from class that affected the evaluation of the municipal school in Kathu district.
The woman, whose name was not mentioned, came under a barrage of criticism from netizens after her handwritten note expelling the three pre-kindergarteners from the child development centre in Patong was posted online.
Facebook user Nattarika Maneesri posted the teacher’s note. She said the centre had four pre-kindergarten rooms and pupils from two rooms were expelled without advance warning.
The teacher attached her note to the paper which parents sign when picking up children after class.
Ms Nattarika quoted a conversation between the teacher and parents of the affected pupils on the parents-teacher Line chat group.
The teacher said the three children were often absent from class and their absence affected the evaluation of the school. This also caused their classmates to get low scores.
The parents explained the children were absent because they were ill. If they let their children go to school, other students could be infected.
The teacher replied on the Line group “I (teacher) invite them to leave because I think their parents can take care of their children better than I do.’’ Her message quickly aroused the ire of many online users.
Daily News Online reported that executives of Patong municipality, which runs the child development centre, were aware of the incident and had ordered an inquiry into the teacher's actions.
