Police have warned about the dangers of swimming in open water after a young teacher tragically died in Leeds.

Lewis Howlett, 25, went missing after swimming with friends in the River Aire on Saturday.

Mr Howlett, who taught at The Farnley Academy in Leeds, was reported missing shortly after 8.30pm from Redcote Lane, in Kirkstall, police said.

His body was recovered in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mr Howlett’s family said in a statement: “We are devastated by the sudden loss of our son Lewis.

“He was loved by all who knew him and our lives will never be the same without him.

“The family now ask for privacy so we can grieve.”

Detective Inspector James Entwistle said: “This is an absolutely tragic loss of the life of a young man, and his family and friends have been left completely devastated.

“Our sympathies are very much with them, and with the school community, at what will be an understandably difficult time.

“Although we are still working to establish the full circumstances of this incident to assist the coroner, his death does appear to starkly illustrate the dangers of swimming in open water.”
