Police are investigating the incident at the Heol Brynglas school after being contacted four days later.

A spokeswoman from South Wales Police said: "South Wales Police is investigating an assault, which was reported on September 20, on a male teacher at Greenhill Special School.

"The alleged incident happened on September 16. No arrests have been made and enquiries are continuing."

The school's chair of governors, councillor Jayne Cowan, said: "Greenhill is a special school for children with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.

"An incident has been reported to the relevant authorities for further investigation and therefore no additional information can be released by the school at this time."

According to the school's most recent Estyn report, Greenhill has more than 50 pupils aged between 11 and 16.

The report states: "All pupils have statements of special educational needs in relation to their social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.

"Many pupils have specific learning difficulties that may include dyslexia, dyspraxia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. A few pupils also have particular medical needs."
