Teacher accused of abuse at Edinburgh schools arrested in South Africa

A FORMER teacher accused by BBC presenter Nicky Campbell of molesting pupils has reportedly been arrested in South Africa.

The man, known by the pseudonym “Edgar”, attended a sexual offences office near Claremont Police Station, in Cape Town, on Monday morning and is due to appear in court at a later date, the BBC reported.

“Edgar” taught at the elite private schools Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College in the 1960s and 1970s – and Campbell, a presenter on BBC 5 Live, said last year he had seen his former teacher molesting a fellow pupil while at school.

The man in question moved to South Africa after living in Scotland and the BBC reports the man claimed he did not molest anyone during his time teaching at a prestigious boys' school in Cape Town.

South Africa approved a UK extradition request for the man in 2020 but removing the 83-year-old has repeatedly been delayed.

The Mirror, which first broke the story, reported that “Edgar” retired from teaching 10 years ago and now lives in a retirement complex in Cape Town.

Campbell is one of a number of former Edinburgh Academy pupils who has made accusations against the man.
