TCU will return to San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl with the same curfew and bed check procedures as two years ago, when Trevone Boykin was arrested and sent home following a bar fight, coach Gary Patterson said.
"It was tight last time," he said Friday after practice when asked if curfew restrictions would be tighter for this trip. "We had bed check. He was in bed check. We knew what we were supposed to do. You can't control knuckleheads."
Boykin received a year's probation and was fined $1,500 by a Bexar County court on June 30, 2016. He was charged with assault of a public servant for an incident at a San Antonio bar early on the morning of Dec. 31, 2015, days before TCU was scheduled to play Oregon in the Alamo Bowl.
Bram Kohlhausen started on short notice in Boykin's place and rallied the Horned Frogs from a 31-0 halftime deficit to a 47-41 triple-overtime victory in the Jan. 2 game. It matched the largest comeback in bowl history, and Kohlhausen set TCU bowl records for completions, attempts and passing yards in going 28 for 45 for 351 yards.
"We obviously had some adversity. Kind of took the wind out of our sails," Patterson said of that week's events. "We kind of regrouped, and it came up to be an experience people will remember the rest of their lives."
Patterson said the same penalty is in place for a similar violation this year.
"You send them home," he said. "You go there to celebrate and reward the good guys and all the things we've been able to do. It's a great city. Riverwalk's unbelievable. Great people, great hospitality. It's a loud bowl, fun to be at. At least I enjoyed it. And you've got to play. And for us, we're going to play a very good Stanford Cardinal football team that's trying to get the same thing we are."
