TCU (2-0) vs. SMU (3-0) Game Preview

Why SMU Will Win

Very, very quietly, SMU has been razor sharp to start the season.

No, the Mustangs haven’t played anyone, but the offense is working with Texas transfer Shane Buechele running the show, the defense is stuffing everyone on third downs, and the pass rush has turned into a killer.

TCU might be 2-0 and coming off a great win over Purdue, but the passing game is still strange – it’s not hitting half of its passes – and there’s nothing going on down the field. The offensive line has allowed five sacks in two games, and here comes the heat.

SMU is bringing the pressure from all sides – hybrid defensive back Patrick Nelson is living behind the line – and should be able to be a bother on passing downs, but …

Why TCU Will Win

The running game is rocking.

How do you make up for a mediocre passing attack? You run and run some more, and it’s working. The Horned Frogs hit Purdue for 346 yards and averaged 273 yards per game so far. The style and formula works, keeping control of the clock for over 36 minutes per game and then letting the defense do the rest.

The Horned Frog D has been a rock, keeping Purdue’s high-octane air show under wraps – the Boilermakers only completed 45% of their passes with a touchdown and two picks – and it’s got the pressure and pass rush to bother Buechele and force SMU to press a bit.

The Mustangs are going to have to take advantage of their few chances to score – they simply might not have the ball enough.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

What’s Going To Happen

TCU will keep being TCU. The defense is going to keep dominating, the running game will control things throughout, and the passing attack will keep on being a major question mark.

SMU will have a few nice moments, but the Horned Frogs will grind down this game to their level with two early long scoring drives to take over early.
