Jason Day has used a full bag of TaylorMade P-760 irons on the PGA Tour for about two years, and Rory McIlroy supplements his muscleback blades with P-760 3- and 4-irons because the hollow-bodied long irons are more forgiving. But TaylorMade said Jon Rahm and a few other pros prefer the feel of solid, one-piece irons, so they continued to play TaylorMade’s P-750 irons.

Now, for elite players who prefer a cavity-back design but demand the feel of a solid club, TaylorMade is offering an updated P-7MC.

The MC stands for muscle cavity, but these clubs are still made for pros, college players and tournament-level golfers who have powerful, repeatable swings. They are not made to provide more distance or a great deal of forgiveness, even as their perimeter weighting makes them slightly easier to play than the new P-7MB muscleback blades.

The P-7MC is forged using TaylorMade’s new, five-step Compact Grain Forging process. The key feature is a 2,000-ton press than forces the grains of steel to pack more tightly. TaylorMade said this process, along with extra mass positioned behind the center of the face, should enhance the feel at impact.

Aesthetically, the P-7MC has minimal offset, an extremely thin topline and a narrow sole to allow golfers to shape shots in different directions and work the club through the turf quickly. While they are a touch larger than the P-7MB, TaylorMade anticipates many players will create combo sets using P-7MC long irons plus P-7MB mid- and short irons.
