Taylor vs Serrano 3 live: Katie Taylor ekes out victory in historic trilogy clash at Madison Square Garden

Katie Taylor secured a historic trilogy whitewash over Amanda Serrano to round out the most important rivalry ever seen in woman’s boxing.

The Irish icon retained her undisputed super-lightweight title as she narrowly outpointed the Puerto Rican, all before a rapturous Madison Square Garden crowd in New York City.

The result harked back to their first bout back in 2022, then the biggest woman’s boxing fight of all time, which saw Taylor eke out victory on the scorecards after a barnstormer of a fight. Then, in November 2024, she repeated the result with another tight decision victory over Serrano – this time in AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, on the undercard of Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson.

Taylor could not confirm whether she would fight again after closing the book on a storied rivalry with Serrano, having shared 30 brilliant rounds of boxing together and changed the sport for good.

Relive all the action from Taylor vs Serrano 3 below:

Taylor and Serrano react to legendary trilogy

"It was truly an amazing night for all of us women and I'm crying because it's all because of you guys," Serrano said. "You guys support us women and thanks to all of you we're able to show our skills."

While Taylor added: "We made history again three times. It's such a privilege to share the ring with her and we're history makers forever.

“And my name is embedded with Amanda's forever and I'm so happy about that."

Is there a better way to go out?

Taylor vs Serrano 3 didn’t live up to the hype - but the trilogy had a deeper purpose

07:34 , Will Castle

In the culmination of the greatest rivalry in women’s boxing history, Katie Taylor played pugilism chess to deal one final dose of heartache to Amanda Serrano.

Before a rapturous crowd at Madison Square Garden, split 60-40 between deafening Puerto Ricans and a hearty Irish contingent, the pair’s historic trilogy bout did not exactly live up to the bar that was set in their previous two clashes. The first, in the biggest women’s fight of all time in 2022, saw Irish icon Taylor narrowly outpoint the Puerto Rican star at the same famed New York venue. It was deja vu for Serrano on this night.

She thought she won - the shock and devastation on her face upon hearing the verdict said it all. She definitely wasn’t alone as thousands of peeved Puerto Ricans poured to the exits upon hearing Taylor’s majority decision victory. Taylor prevailed on the scorecards by 97-93, 97-93, 95-95, but was not her explosive self, with the third meeting by far the cagiest of the trilogy.

Amanda Serrano: "Thank you for supporting women's boxing"

06:00 , Will Castle

"I tried something different, it was all about working smarter not harder,” said an emotional Serrano.

“I tried to keep my distance and not fight with her because apparently it didn't work the first two fights. We tried to stay with the long punches and one twos, and it just wasn't enough.

"I'll have to go back and watch it. My team said I won and obviously I go with what my team tells me.

"I want to thank every single one of the fans for coming out and supporting women's boxing. It was an amazing night for all of us women. I am crying because it is all because of you guys. Thanks to you, we are able to show our skills and have this great platform for women.

"Thank you Katie Taylor for an incredible three fights and thirty rounds. It has truly been an honour to face you, a true champion and warrior.

"To all of the ladies who fought tonight - you guys did incredible. We made history. I am proud of each and every one of you."

Katie Taylor: "We made history three times"

05:40 , Will Castle

"First of all, I want to thank God and Jesus for an amazing victory,” she said.

"I want to thank Amanda Serrano as well, what an amazing fighter. We have made history three times. It is such a historic fight and a pleasure to share the ring with her. We are history makers forever.

"I thought I did enough [to win]. I boxed smart and well, she wasn't catching much tonight but it is always a close contest.

"I have a huge amount of respect for Amanda. What a warrior.

"I can't tell you how much it means to me for people to spend their hard-earned money to come over and support me. I love you all and I love my country. Every time I step in here I represent my country and every single one of you guys. Thank you so much."

Katie Taylor 'doesn't know' if she'll fight again

05:26 , Will Castle

Katie Taylor couldn’t give a definitive answer to whether she will fight again, after completing her trilogy whitewash over Amanda Serrano.

Both look so emotional. If that is the end the road for their rivalry, what a rivalry it’s been. Thirty incredible rounds of boxing shared, and a sport changed forever.

Amanda Serrano gives tearful speech in defeat

05:23 , Will Castle

“Support women’s boxing,” Serrano says as she wipes away the tears, having suffered defeat at the culmination of a historic rivalry.

She looks heartbroken, shocked at the result. So does Katie Taylor, to be fair. That was hardly an open and shut result.

KATIE TAYLOR WINS BY MAJORITY DECISION!

05:16 , Will Castle

AND STILLLLL! KATIE TAYLOR GETS IT DONE FOR A THIRD TIME!

The final scorecards see it as 97-93, 97-93, 95-95.

We can barely hear her talk - a mixture of jeers and cheers as the furious Puerto Rican contingent head for the MSG exits.

The Irish, though? “Ole, ole, ole, ole!”

Round 10

Two more minutes. Big body shot from Taylor forces Serrano to take a step back, but she comes back fighting.

They trade hooks before a one-two combo from Taylor gets through. This crowd are wanting a late Katie resurgence. She’s landing and MSG is reaching fever pitch!

But there’s no Hail-Mary KO to speak of here, as the trilogy bout goes the distance!

Taylor finished well, but has Serrano done enough to win it on the scorecards and finally get one over on the Irishwoman?

We go to the judges...

Round nine

Both trade left hooks, with Taylor briefly going on the offensive. That’s before three body shots gets the champ backpeddling, only to come back with a straight left.

Round eight

Calculated jab from Serrano gets through as landed shots become increasingly rare.

Round seven

We’re entering squeaky bum time. Both fighters are keeping their distance, wary not to do anything potentially legacy damaging.

Taylor steps in and lands a right hook, partially blocked by Serrano. The Puerto Rican responds by going to the body again, but Taylor come back with another hook upstairs.

This is so tight - but is anyone really surprised?

Round six

Serrano is biding her time, guiding Taylor towards the corner, before a heavy body shot gives her a chance to pounce.

The pair whale on each other, trading close-quarter punches. Taylor then lands a sharp combo that’s eaten up by Serrano.

As the round comes to a close, Serrano lands maybe the biggest shot of the night as she sends Taylor stumbling with a searching left hook! But the bell goes, preventing the Puerto Rican from potentially going in for the kill.

Round five

The unofficial scorecard has this tied going into the fifth. All to play for.

Serrano is beginning to target the body more and begins to whale on her opponent after closing the distance.

Taylor is still lapping the ring, close to the ropes, but she gets away to catch Serrano with a counter hook.

The positions flip, Serrano now looking to get more central, as “there’s only one Katie Taylor” rings around.

The Puerto Ricans are louder, but the Irish have their anthems on lock.

Round four

As “The Fields of Athenry” is bellowed around MSG, Taylor finds herself on the defensive as Serrano tries to close the distance.

However, a late-round flurry sees her clip with a looping hook before cracking her flush on the nose to see out the round - Serrano eats it up.

Round three

Taylor currently happy to do laps around the ring as Serrano resides in the centre, shooting to catch her on the approach but to little avail so far.

Then suddenly, BANG BANG BANG! The taps are loosened and Taylor lands a sharp three-piece combination, which is met by a flurry from Serrano in response.

Serrano then gets Taylor into the corner, looking to rain down shots before the Irishwoman reverses the position, firing a left hook off the dome of an under-pressure Serrano!

It’s heating up, folks!

Round two

Both opting to send searching jabs rather than go too hot and heavy, with Taylor clipping Serrano to land the first real shot of the contest.

Serrano responds with a one-two to the body, which gets a rousing reaction from the pro-Puerto Rico crowd.

Tentative start to the trilogy bout.

The wave of noise that just crashed against my eardrums is like nothing I can describe.

Serrano seemingly has the whole of Puerto Rico in the building.

Sung to the ring by Puerto Rico’s Natti Natasha, danced to the ring by the Knicks cheerleaders - what an entrance!

Time for the national anthems....

04:24 , Will Castle

Ireland up first... and they are out in FULL FORCE!

The sheer noise that was made when the anthem reached its crescendo was just, wow. Goosebumps.

Can Puerto Rico follow? Of course they can. Ireland have a hefty representation, but no doubt the Serrano faithful are stronger in numbers. Incredible atmosphere.

Katie Taylor takes aim at ‘whining’ Amanda Serrano ahead of trilogy clash

Katie Taylor says she has had enough of the “whining and complaining” from Amanda Serrano as the pair prepare to go to war for a third time.

The rivals came face to face at their press conference in New York on Wednesday ahead of their highly-anticipated trilogy bout over Taylor’s undisputed super-lightweight titles, which takes place on Friday at the iconic Madison Square Garden.

Taylor and Serrano have built one of the most storied rivalries in history to transcend woman’s boxing, having already put on two fight-of-the-year contenders that both went to the wire.

Round eight

Deafening reaction from the MSG faithful as Serrano appears on the big screen once more, blowing a kiss to the camera. But back to the fight at hand...

And it’s Miranda who starts on top! She lands a big left hook after clipping the chin to send the champ into the ropes, the most vulnerable she’s looked all fight.

Baumgardner responds by charging in with 20 seconds of the round to go, looking for a one-shot kill for the ages. She doesn’t get it, and this goes to a ninth.

Round five

Miranda doesn’t like being kept at a fair distance. She looks at her corner for guidance on how to close the gap, before rushing in and trading shots with the champ.

Baumgardner once again ducks and weaves away while connecting to the body while she leaves. She’s in total control.

Round six

A wry smile on the face of Baumgardner as she bows to Miranda’s desire to make this fight more all-action, both throwing down as the crowd begin to boil.

A huge right hook from the champ just misses as Miranda snaps her head out of the way, and this fight goes on!

Round three

Miranda is really under the cosh here. She’s being picked apart by Baumgardner whose speed is proving very hard to handle.

The Spaniard responds with a big right hook of her own as she tries to grow into the fight, but it’s the champion who’s looking the more comfortable out there.

Round four

Miranda tries to ramp up the pressure by closing the distance, but gets punished getting out of the clinch as Baumgardner connects with a departing left.

Baumgardner is happy to manage her distance with the jab rather than rush into anything - but as she’s pushed into close-quarter combat again, she sends Miranda stumbling right a sharp hook!

“I’m so sorry, this is 20 years, man - 20 years,” she says, weeping in the ring with her unified belts.

“I was 15 years old, and I wanted to box, and I started with this man right here. My mother told me no, told me to go to college, but told me that if I brought my degree back, I could pursue boxing.

“Twenty years later, we unified. I am overwhelmed with gratitude, with joy. These guys pushed me to my limit this camp. I got beat up every day in sparring and I know it was worth it because Savannah Marshall is f***ing phenomenal.”

It’s in the centre of the ring where Marshall gets some joy. She connects nicely with a body shot, before just dodging a big right hook that goes high.

Green gestures with a slit throat. She’s going for the kill.

There’s suddenly a stark reminder of what Green can do when she connects, however. Two hefty left hooks land flush on the face of Green, halting the Hartlepool girl’s push forward, but Marshall is able to eat both without showing too much sign of weakness.

Round four

Both start come out for the fourth wit intent as Green’s aggression rouses the crowd. She hurts Marshall with a body shot but the Brit responds, chipping away in the clinch.

Green then gets a point deducted for holding, for which she lets out her anger by cracking Marshall with a headshot, which evoked a “yeh, that hurt” smile from the Brit.

The Mexican is on top - but how long can she keep this aggression up before she gasses?

Round four

Both trade shots from close range, Scotney going to the body before Mercado swings for the head.

Mercado is staying aggressive, driving Scotney into trouble as an overhand forces her to the ropes. Scotney rallies and responds with a heavy shot of her own, but it likely won’t be enough to save the round.

Here we go!

We’ve had a spine tingling rendition of “Star-Spangled Banner” from singer JoJo, and now it’s time for Scotney and Mercado to be welcomed to the arena!

Lewisham-born Scotney comes out to “Supersonic” by Oasis, embracing the reunion heard around the world from across the pond. But it’s Mexico’s Mercado who has the backing of MSG.

This one’s scheduled for 10 rounds, for the unified super-bantamweight titles!

Records are being broken!

There are 17 titles on the line tonight - the most of any boxing undercard in history.

The stakes literally COULDN’T be higher!

No stage more fitting than The Garden

01:23 , Will Castle

If the first rendition of Taylor vs Serrano is anything to go by, Madison Square Garden - the Mecca of boxing - knows how to blow the roof off for the greatest rivalry in women’s combat history.

A lot of Puerto Rico flags can be seen in support of Serrano - no surprise, given that New York City is home to the largest Puerto Rican community outside of Puerto Rico - but the Irish are out in full force as well.

Main card up next!

Cherneka Johnson makes Aussie history

01:11 , Will Castle

Cherneka Johnson just made history in the featured prelim of the night.

As the doctor calls time on Shurretta Metcalf after multiple checks of her vision, Australia has its first ever undisputed champion crowned in history. Male or female.

Slight controversy over the stoppage - but whether it was the ninth or the tenth round, Johnson was getting her arm raised. An impressive performance and deserving result!

Taylor takes aim at ‘whining’ Serrano ahead of trilogy clash

01:10 , Alex Pattle

Controversy erupted post-fight in November, when Serrano used her interview on Netflix to accuse Taylor of an intentional headbutt, which left her with a gruesome cut above her eye.

Taylor said at this week’s press conference: “The fact is, I am 2-0 against her. Opinions are opinions, but facts are facts.

“I’m just sick of the complaining and whining from your team.”

“The only thing that matters is that I’m 2-0 against her. I plan on staying unbeaten against her.”

Big Mo, the new voice of boxing, wants you to listen – no, really listen

Saturday 12 July 2025 00:50 , Alex Pattle

“I wanna say this without sounding like a d***,” Kody Mommaerts starts. His job, after all, involves selecting the right words. And though the stakes are lower on a Zoom call with The Independent than when a billion-dollar company entrusts him with a live microphone, the ring announcer still considers his words – and delivery – carefully.

In this case, it is all to do with humility, and his concern that an analogy for his career might be misinterpreted as arrogance. “I used to play video games as a kid,” says Mommaerts, widely known as “Big Mo”. “I don’t play much anymore, but there was a phrase called ‘speedrunning’. ‘How quickly can I beat this game?’ In a way... I’ve kind of speedrun announcing. I don’t want that to come across as d***ish!”

It’s okay, he’s allowed to say it. Firstly, he is just over six months removed from announcing one of the most-watched fights of all time, in Jake Paul’s boxing match with Mike Tyson – a bout that played out in front of more than 72,000 fans in Dallas, and more than 60 million households live on Netflix. Secondly, Mommaerts has already ticked off boxing, MMA, bare-knuckle fighting events and more, at an elite level. Thirdly, at 29 years old, he is the youngest MC at the top end of combat sports.

A rivalry as important as Messi vs Ronaldo: How Taylor vs Serrano transcended women’s boxing

Saturday 12 July 2025 00:40 , Alex Pattle

As one of the great fighting rivalries comes to an end, it is difficult to know where to start. How about the middle? Not just the middle rounds of the middle episode of this trilogy, but the middle of the ring in the middle of AT&T Stadium, which was the centre of the sporting world on this night in November.

They say, as you might have heard, that everything is bigger in Texas, and the gruesome gash above Amanda Serrano’s right eye adhered to this adage. As 72,000 bewitched fans watched on in the cavernous home of the Dallas Cowboys, they forgot that they were waiting for the biggest commercial fight in years: YouTuber Jake Paul’s carnivalesque clash with a 58-year-old Mike Tyson.

That fight, unsurprisingly, did not deliver on the almost incomprehensible hype, but it did deliver Netflix 60 million households’ worth of viewers. But the chief support bout? That reached the realm of mutual benefit. As Serrano and Katie Taylor went to war over the undisputed super-lightweight titles, their frenzied collisions were zapped into almost 50 million homes, producing the most absorbing advert possible for women’s boxing.

Welcome to our live coverage of Taylor vs Serrano 3!

Friday 11 July 2025 23:00 , Alex Pattle

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will fight one last time tonight, as they round out a historic boxing trilogy – one of the most important the sport has ever seen.

In 2022, in the biggest women’s fight of all time, Irish icon Taylor narrowly outpointed the Puerto Rican star at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Then, in November 2024, she repeated the result with another tight decision victory over Serrano – this time in AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, on the undercard of Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson.

Taylor vs Serrano 2, thanks to its platform on Netflix, became the most-watched sporting event in US history with 55 million viewers. Now, the rivals return to Netflix and to Madison Square Garden, with Serrano, 36, aiming to finally get one over on Taylor, 39.

“The fact is I am 2-0 against her,” said Olympic champion Taylor, who defends the undisputed super-lightweight titles against Serrano tonight, as she did in November. “Opinions are opinions, but facts are facts. I’m just sick of the complaining and whining from your team. The only thing that matters is that I’m 2-0 against her. I plan on staying unbeaten against her.”

There will be a stacked undercard, too, with the likes of Alycia Baumgardner, Savannah Marshall, Chantelle Cameron, Ellie Scotney and Shadasia Green in action.
