Taylor Swift takes education seriously. So seriously that she’s donated $50,000 to the New York school system.

Swift had promised in October that she would donate all the royalties from her track Welcome to New York to the city’s schools. And her US publicist confirmed to the New York Times that this donation was just the first, and that the proceeds of the track will continue to go to NYC schools.

The first donation will be used to fund Sing!, a musical production competition run by and aimed at high-school students. A spokeswoman for the city’s education department said the city was “deeply appreciative of this kind of gesture”.

Swift is known for unexpected and extravagant acts of charity and kindness. Earlier this year she sent a fan a package incuding a watercolour she had painted, a Polaroid photo, a necklace, a pouch – and $1,989 to help pay off the fan’s student loans.
