Taylor Swift asks fans for kindness as she plays 'song about ex' for first time in 11 years

Taylor Swift surprised her loyal fans with a stunning performance of Dear John almost 11 years since the last time she played it live.

However, with speculation still rife about who the song is about, the US singer, 33, shared an important message prior to belting it out.

TayTay urged her fans to act with “kindness and gentleness” on social media ahead of the release of new album Speak Now.

She revealed she is in awe of some of the interactions she has with fans while she is on stage and pleaded that such positivity continues after next month's release.

Her words come as it rumours grow about whether her Dear John tune will appear on her album. And those rumours continued to build after she decided to sing it live again after over a decade.

The tune was originally on her Speak Now album which was released in 2010 and while she stopped short of naming anyone during her latest speech, she continued: "I’m 33 years old. I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19, except the songs I wrote…

"I’m not putting this album out so that you can go and should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about 14 million years ago."

It's said the tune was penned following her reported relationship with John Mayer. The duo are said to have dated between December 2009 and February 2010 after the pair collaborated on his song Half of My Heart.

At the time, he was 31 and she was 19 and their split wasn't exactly amicable.

In the song, Taylor questions: "Don't you think I was too young to be messed with? The girl in the dress, cried the whole way home - I should've known."

She continues: "Well, maybe it's me and my blind optimism to blame - or maybe it's you and your sick need to give love then take it away.'

And as the outburst goes on she fumes: "And you'll add my name to your long list of traitors who don't understand, and I'll look back and regret how I ignored when they said: 'Run as fast as you can."'
