Taylor Swift acknowledges 'weirdness' of new Cats film: 'I love it'

Taylor Swift has acknowledged the “weirdness” of Cats, the musical adaptation arriving in cinemas later this month.

The singer, who has just been announced as one of the 2020 headliners for BST Hyde Park, will star in the new film that’s based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running musical.

She will appear alongside an ensemble including Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson and Idris Elba.

Following the release of the trailer, film fans were left scratching their heads about why director Tom Hooper had decided to lace “digital fur technology” over the face and bodies of the actors playing the lead feline characters.

Swift, speaking to Vogue, has explained this was actually one of the reasons she said yes to the opportunity.

“I really had an amazing time with Cats,’” she said, adding: “I think I loved the weirdness of it. I loved how I felt I’d never get another opportunity to be like this in my life.”

For the film, Swift  – who this year released her new album, Lover – has co-written a song titled “Beautiful Ghosts” alongside Lloyd Webber.

Cats is released in cinemas on 20 December.
