Taylor Heinicke re-signed with Washington, but team’s QB search is still on

News came out on Wednesday morning that the Washington Football Team re-signed QB Taylor Heinicke to a two-year contract, bringing him back to the team after an electric finish to the 2020 season that ended with a close playoff loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In that game, Heinicke set the world on fire with his play, going 26-for-44 for 306 yards and two total touchdowns. His near comeback was almost as miraculous as this leap into the end zone.

There was always a belief that Washington would bring Heinicke back this year, but now that’s certain, where does that leave them at the QB position? Well, pretty much in the same place that they were yesterday. Though some fans think that Heinicke is good enough to be the starting QB, Washington is still looking to land a big fish, and they’re going to keep swinging for the fences and exhaust all options via trade, free agency, or the draft. There is a chance that Heinicke could end up starting should Washington strike out this offseason, and he wins a QB competition with some pieces that are in-house, but the signing on Wednesday morning definitely does not mean that Ron Rivera found his guy.

Instead, think of it as QB insurance. Washington now has a player who knows the system and has proved that he can step up in big moments when needed. Beyond that, the search is still on.
