Taylor Heinicke moves up two spots in the NFL QB Index

Washington quarterback Taylor Heinicke has had a pretty good week. Last Thursday, Heinicke completed 34 of 46 passes for 336 yards with two touchdowns in leading Washington to a last-second 30-29 victory over the New York Giants.

On Wednesday, Heinicke landed a significant sponsorship deal with Bud Light.

Next up for Heinicke and Washington is a Week 3 trip to Buffalo to face one of the best teams in the NFL. It’s Heinicke’s first road start as quarterback for Washington.

After such an outstanding performance in prime time last week, Heinicke received plenty of national recognition for his performance. Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com does a weekly quarterback index, and last week, he ranked Heinicke dead last at No. 32.

After his performance in the win over the Giants, Heinicke moves up two spots to No. 30. He is now ranked ahead of the top two picks of the 2021 NFL draft in Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson.

Who cares if every other throw is high if Heinicke’s teammates keep catching them? The owner of the most completions in his first three starts in NFL history plays a high-risk style that proves again aggressiveness is a positive trait in a backup. It’s how Ryan Fitzpatrick got this far.

The first sentence is almost a back-handed compliment to Heinicke. For the record, every other throw wasn’t high. While he did get off to a slow start, Heinicke was money in the fourth quarter of Washington’s Week 2 win.

Washington will undoubtedly take performances like that from Heinicke on a weekly basis.
