Taylor Grange plans 36-storey tower in Birmingham

A new 36-storey tower is set to be built on a Birmingham city centre street already busy with high-rise development.

Plans have been unveiled by Birmingham-based Taylor Grange Developments to construct a £58 million block of 264 serviced apartments on land at 211 Broad Street.

The project would also have space for retail, food and drink outlets, residents' lounge and a gym but no car parking.

At just 31 feet wide and a first for Birmingham, the tower would be a so-called 'super slender' building due to the compact nature of the application site and its proximity to other existing and planned buildings.

The 'super slender' building will sit next to Moda Living's new 42-storey residential tower (Glancy Nicholls Architects)

The site is currently occupied by the vacant Transport House, the former home of the TGWU trade union, and also 117-118 Tennant Street at the rear - both of which are to be demolished as part of the scheme.

A stop on the new Westside extension of the West Midlands Metro will be a short walk away when it completes in 2021.

Jewellery Quarter-based practice Glancy Nicholls Architects has designed the scheme with planning consultancy from Savills.

A report submitted in support of the new planning application said: "The proposals have been carefully designed taking full account of the existing and emerging built context in order to provide an appropriate response.

"The proposed super slender tower is of a high-quality design and will provide a positive and innovative addition to the Birmingham skyline.

"The public consultation received only limited interest (but) there was universal support for the redevelopment of the site.

"The proposed development is sustainable and will deliver public benefits for social, economic and environmental considerations."

If approved, 211 Broad Street would become the latest major development to join the road which is famous for its weekend nightlife.

Moda Living is now on site developing its 42-storey residential tower The Mercian which is next door to this latest application plot.

The 22-storey phase one of The Bank finished last summer and work is well under way on the 33-storey second phase of that apartment scheme.

And in May, Jurys Inn won permission to demolish a car park next to its hotel in Broad Street and build a new 14-storey NYX Hotel.
