Taxpayer to foot bill 'of around €10 million' to protect Donald Trump during Ireland visit

Protecting US President Donald Trump during his visit to Ireland will cost the taxpayer around €10 million, it has been claimed.

Significant measures will be in place to protect Mr Trump, with the US Secret Service and gardai launching an unprecedented security operation ahead of Air Force One's scheduled landing at Shannon on Wednesday.

Annual leave for gardai has been cancelled this week and hundreds of Irish troops are being deployed to Clare and Limerick from army barracks across the country.

The Irish Mirror revealed last month that Mr Trump will be protected by a powerful US warship and a nuclear submarine during his visit to five-star hotel in Doonbeg, Co Clare.

The US Navy will secretly steer the ships bristling with weapons towards the West coast in the days before the President touches down at Shannon on June 5.

It will cost the State around €10m to provide a 'ring of steel' around the US leader and his entourage for the duration of their visit, the Irish Independent reports.

The tiny village of Doonbeg, Co Clare will go into lockdown from Monday in anticipation of the visit.

It is expected that the US leader will spend much of his time at his hotel, but his wife Melania may take in some of the local sights.

Gardai have put together a major security operation in co-operation with the Army, Navy and Air Corps.

Uniformed and plain-clothes gardai have been monitoring traffic at Shannon Airport and Trump International luxury resort.

The president will touch down for his first visit to Ireland since winning the 2016 US election on Wednesday.

He will arrive in the morning with his wife Melania and meet Mr Varadkar before heading to his five-star Doonbeg golf resort.

On Thursday he will depart Ireland for a day trip to France to attend the D-Day remembrance in Normandy and is due to return to Doonbeg in the evening.

Road closures and a no-fly zone will be implemented around Doonbeg, Co Clare, with residents who live within the exclusion boundary needing a special pass to access their homes.
