Taxi rank closure in Trent Street as city council carries out construction work

A taxi rank in Trent Street has been temporarily closed while Nottingham City Council carries out construction work in the area.

The left side rank near to Loxley House has been put out of action as work started on Thursday, August 22.

Concerns were raised by taxi drivers that disabled passengers would struggle to access cabs, but a decision has been made to create a temporary rank while work is underway.

Wasim Amin, from Nottingham Licensed Taxi Owners and Drivers Association, said: "Following extensive discussions over several weeks between the association and the council’s traffic department network management team, it has been agreed that the only safe practical solution is for the disabled passengers taxi bay on Trent Street to be relocated.

"It will be moved just around the corner onto the beginning of Station Street, to the previously existing short general pick up and set down bay immediately outside the Loxley House entrance.

"The first licensed taxi in the rank on the right hand side of Trent Street can, immediately upon being hailed by a disabled person in a wheelchair, move across the road to the new disabled passengers taxi bay to enable safe access."

Councillor Sally Longford, Nottingham City Council deputy leader, said: "Building work is taking place over the summer and autumn to create a new space where people can access a range of services on the ground floor of Loxley House.

"As well as a new waiting area and improved facilities for customers, the work will create a new easily accessible entrance on Trent Street, which has meant that five taxi bays have had to be suspended, as well as inevitably causing other disruption around Loxley House.

"We apologise for any disruption but expect the new facility will be complete by the end of the year.

"We have temporarily created a bay on Station Street for taxi drivers and other drivers to pick up and drop off disabled passengers and have extended the taxi rank on Traffic Street to compensate for the loss of bays on Trent Street for taxis serving Nottingham Station."
