Taxi drivers conduct sting-like operation on motorist after he allegedly agreed to take fare from city to Dublin Airport

A man allegedly posing as a taxi driver in Dublin City Centre has been confronted by a group of drivers who say they are "sick of dealing with this all the time".

The men, who are all legitimate taxi drivers, set up a sting-style job on another driver who was parked on Dame St and appeared to be offering lifts for money.

The men walk up to a car and ask the driver if he can go to the airport to which he appears to agree.

They ask if he can take card payments and he appears to say no so one man is sent to the atm by his friend.

When he comes back three of the group then get into the car and another comes around and opens the driver's door.

They say: "We're all taxi drivers and we're dealing with this all the time.

"People are illegally operating taxi services."

The driver responds saying he did not know he was doing anything wrong and the men then check his insurance and say they will report it to his company

"We pay a lot of money to be taxi drivers." they tell him.

"It is an illegal operation that you're doing - and hard working drivers are losing money because of you, and many people are doing this.

"So we're going to report you to the guards and report you to your insurance company."

The man being confronted then pleads saying "OK I won't do any work. Sorry I have to go, I want to go home."

The men insist he stays until the gardai arrive and the man continues to plead with them asking if he can tell them his story.

They insist he can tell the story to gardai and not them.

A voice can eventually be heard in the background saying "the guards said to contact the regulator" and the video eventually stops.

Dublin Live has contacted the garda press office who said they had no record of the incident.

The Department of Transport has also been contacted.
