Taxi driver to face murder trial over amateur footballer 'hit and run'

A taxi driver is to stand trial charged with mowing down and murdering an amateur footballer.

Derek McClinton is accused of killing Craig Kearney, 24, in East Kilbride on March 5, 2017.

Prosecutors claim McClinton hit Craig with his car, knocked him to the ground before driving over his head and body.

It is alleged the 49-year-old failed to get help and left Craig – who played for AFC Bonnyholm in Glasgow’s Pollok – lying on the road in the dark.

McClinton, also of East Kilbride, also faces a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice. He denies the charges.

Lord Arthurson continued bail at the High Court in Glasgow yesterday and set trial for October.
