Taxi driver seriously hurt in horrific crash - this is all that was left of his car

This is all that remained of a taxi after an 'horrific' crash in Wigan .

The driver, a man in his 40s, suffered serious injuries following the two-car smash in Preston Road, Standish, shortly after 1.10am on Sunday.

Police said the taxi driver was hit by another motorist who then fled the scene, leaving the man trapped inside his vehicle.

Firefighters attended the scene and cut the man free before he was then taken to Royal Preston Hospital in an ambulance.

The driver, who worked for Chorley-based Coopers Taxis, had dropped a customer off in Wigan just minutes before the crash happened.

Police officers shared a picture of the destroyed vehicle (GMP)

A spokesman for the company said he had suffered a broken leg, hip and back and remained in hospital.

Following the crash, the road was closed in both directions at the junction with Pepper Lane.

An image shared by Greater Manchester Police's traffic officers showed the damage to the car, which was virtually destroyed.

In a tweet posted on Sunday, officers promised to catch the driver responsible.

It read: "This motorist was hit by a driver who then fled the scene, leaving this driver trapped and seriously injured. D Relief RPU officers will make sure the offending driver answers for this horrific crash  #RPUWest #XT #nonefortheroad "

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance said: "We received a call at 1.12am on Sunday to a two-vehicle road traffic collision.

"We had one patient, a male in his 40s, who had head and back pain.

"They were taken to hospital in an ambulance."
