Taxi driver rescued after turning left and following sat nav into the Bridgewater Canal

A taxi driver had to be rescued after following his sat nav into the Bridgewater Canal in Eccles.

The “embarrassed” driver made a left turn off Bridgewater Way and straight into the water on Sunday evening (April 11).

GMP Traffic officers say he had a lucky escape.

Taking to Twitter, a spokesman for the force said: “This taxi was rescued by RPU west A-relief in Eccles after the driver followed his sat nav straight into the Bridgewater Canal.

“Very lucky escape for the embarrassed driver.”

Replying to the Tweet, Twitter user TheBigUglyGamer said: "I hope they were reported to the council as well as having to re-sit a driving test. That's just shocking."

Earlier this year, a woman was rescued from a city centre canal after driving her car into the freezing water.

The vehicle ended up in Vantage Quay, off Brewer Street, just before 7.30pm on January 2.

She managed to escape the vehicle unhurt.

Vantage Quay resident Josh Fielding helped rescue the woman from the icy water.

Josh, 31, told the Manchester Evening News previously: "I live in a ground floor apartment and I was playing on my PlayStation with my partner when I heard a splash.

"I looked out the window and there was a small white van, a VW Caddy, bobbing up and down in water.

"I could see some movement inside so I climbed over the balcony to help.

Police say the driver and passengers managed to escape the vehicle unhurt. (ASP)

"When I ran back there was a woman sitting with both legs hanging out of the van.

"Then calm as you like she was saying: 'Excuse me. Excuse me.'

"She was going to throw her handbag towards me but I was quite frank with her.

"I said she needed to get out the van and start swimming and not stop.

"So she did, and when she got within about a metre of the edge I pulled her out."

It's not clear how the van ended up in the water.
