Taxi driver 'leapt from car' as it burst into fireball on Scots residential street

A taxi driver leapt from his car as it burst into an explosive fireball on a residential Scots street.

Emergency services raced to King Street in Hamilton after the alarm was raised at around 4pm on Monday, January 17.

It's understood smoke started pouring out of the red private hire cab while it was parked at the side of the road.

The driver is said to have struggled to get the vehicle door open for a split second, before jumping from the car before it became engulfed in flames.

Footage taken by local residents shows huge flames firing out the front of the vehicle.

Plumes of black smoke can be seen billowing up into the sky.

In the clip a large explosion can then be heard as the blaze continues to take hold.

One shocked local said: "The driver got a fright trying to get out the car as the door seemed to jam for a few seconds. He is okay now."

"The taxi man was stuck in the car and just got out before the taxi went up in flames as his car just stopped."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed one appliance scrambled to the scene.

Thankfully no one was injured as a result of the blaze.

The cause of the fire is so far unclear.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 3.58pm on Monday, January 17, to reports of a vehicle on fire in King Street, Hamilton.

“Operations control immediately mobilised a fire engine to the location and firefighters wearing extinguished the fire.

“Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”

Police Scotland confirmed they were not involved in the incident.
