Taxi driver followed elderly woman home and robbed her of her casino winnings

A taxi driver robbed an elderly woman of casino winnings then targeted her again months later. Yusef Mohamed from Cardiff left the woman badly injured in the second mugging.

Mohamed, 38, followed the 77-year-old on November 20 last year as she drove home from Les Croupiers in Capital Retail Park. He robbed her when she arrived at her driveway in Highlight Lane, Barry, stealing £850 in cash, her mobile phone, digital camera and several makeup items.

The second attack came on January 8 as Mohamed returned to the woman's home and grabbed her handbag containing a phone, car keys, bank cards and various other items. He dragged her across the floor, causing "significant" injuries to her forehead, facial cuts and a broken thumb, before fleeing in his taxi with "a large amount" of cash, said a South Wales Police spokesperson.

The second mugging was caught on CCTV. Mohamed, of Wells Street in Riverside, pleaded guilty to two counts of robbery and one of wounding. In a sentencing at Cardiff Crown Court he was jailed for four years and eight months as well as being placed under a 10-year restraining order.

The victim and her family thanked police for their "quick response and continued support" through the investigation. Detective Inspector Dan Todd said: “This targeted violent robbery has left a lasting impact on the elderly victim and I am glad our team were able to successfully obtain all the evidence to secure a charge and conviction.”
