Police said the the 52-year-old taxi driver was reversing his silver Ford Mondeo out at the junction of Ilford Avenue and Poulton Road when his attacker started verbally abusing him.
A police spokesperson said: "The man then assaulted the driver by punching him to the face and hitting him over the head before causing damage to the car."

The man suffered cuts to his head and cuts and bruising to an arm and hand as a result of the unprovoked attack around 6.25pm on Sunday, May 9.
Damage was also caused to the roof of the victim's taxi.
Merseyside Police say they believe the man in the CCTV images "could assist with the investigation".
Detective Inspector Tom Clarke said: “This was a nasty and unprovoked attack on an innocent man minding his own business and we are determined to catch the person responsible.
“I would ask the man in the images, or anyone who recognises him to contact us as we believe he may have information which is vital to our enquiries.”
