A 19-year-old ride-hail taxi driver has been arrested on a charge of raping an African passenger and stealing her phone.

According to police, the 28-year-old woman is a teacher at a private school. She filed her complaint with police in Thalang district early Sunday morning.

The passenger alleged the taxi driver stopped his car in Soi Somboon Sapin, Thalang district, late Saturday night. He then allegedly dragged her to the roadside, raped her and stole her phone.

The alleged assault occurred after the driver dropped the woman's friend off at her destination in Soi Somboon Sap.

The teacher remained in the taxi expecting the driver to take her to her home in tambon Pa Khlok. Instead, the driver stopped along a deserted section of Soi Somboon Sap and raped her, she alleged

Police took the woman to Thalang Hospital for a medical checkup.

The 19-year-old suspect was arrested at a house in Thalang district on Monday. He denied he raped the woman and said the sex was payment because she could not afford the fare.

The police investigation was continuing.
