In a surprise check conducted by the intelligence wing of the Commercial Taxes Department (Madurai division), it was found that three cardamom dealers here had reportedly raised fake transactions and evaded tax to the tune of ₹13.16 crore.
Officials, who conducted the searches simultaneously over the last three days, said on Sunday that the suspicion arose after random checks carried out with regard to the transactions were fake. Preliminary inquiries indicated that the transactions amounted to ₹263.13 crore.
Based on the confessions, the teams found that in the process, they had evaded ₹13.16 crore of GST. Steps were being initiated as per the GST Act of 2017 and legal action would be initiated, the officials added.
