Before you get a tattoo, there is a lot to consider - like how much you're willing to spend and where you want it placed.
But typically, the first thing that people tend to think about is the design they want.
With such a variety of styles out there, it can take time to find an artist who both specialises in the style you like and who you can trust to bring your vision to life.
Some like doing watercolour designs, while others do stick-and-pokes but Janedoe Thundear, as he's known online, gives his customers tattoos that purposefully look bad.
While customers of the Pittsburgh-based artist love his work, others who don't understand it, troll him.

In a video that has been viewed more than three million times on his TikTok ( @notjanedoethundear ) he showed off a tattoo he'd done for a client - a devil with the legs of a goat holding a pitchfork that has a speech bubble reading: "Do sins bro!"
The tattoo has jagged, shaky looking lines, which according to the artist, is exactly how it should look.
Although many other artists and supporters of his work are aware that the style of tattoo means it's supposed to look rough around the edges, people still critiqued his work.
Since being posted the video has racked up more than 628,000 likes and 3,400 comments, with one person asking: "How does one specialise in this?"
Another wrote: "My kid drawing my next tattoo."
"I get what you’re going for but you went outside the lines with the colour…" commented a third.
Others, on the other hand, rallied to defend him, generously complimenting his style of work.
"The point is it’s tattooed well… meaning correctly… meaning it looks like a kids art, but the tattoo is gonna be clean, last long, and heal evenly," said one person.
Another wrote: "Your linework is perfection."
A third put: "Solid line work. Colour is saturated. This is the prime example of a bad tattoo done well."
"It takes talent to be a great artist... but it takes a great artist to make bad art," added one viewer.
But the artist doesn't let the haters get to him, as he wrote in the comments: "Their grumpy comments mean more visibility for me.
"I win in the end haha."
