Snow removal is continuing for this season's opening of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, which stretches through the Northern Japanese Alps mountain region in Toyama and Nagano prefectures.
The route is seen from Yomiuri Shimbun aircraft on snow-covered slopes on Wednesday. The whole of the route will reopen on April 15.
Snow removal on the toll road is occurring at an about 23 kilometer-long section between the Bijodaira spot, which is 977 meters above sea level, and the Murodo spot, which is 2,450 meters above sea level.
The height of the snow wall, which stands along both sides of the road, will likely be the same as usual at about 17 meters, or lower, according to Tateyama Kurobe Kanko Co., a Toyama-based company that manages the Alpine Route.
This season marks the 50th anniversary since the Alpine Route opened all sections in 1971.
