Tate Martell’s ‘swing and miss’ tweet backfired after he lost Miami’s quarterback battle

On Monday, the Miami Hurricanes named their starting quarterback for the Aug. 24 opener against Florida.

It was Jarren Williams … and not transfer quarterback Tate Martell.

The past year has been especially frustrating for Martell. He signed with the Buckeyes as a highly touted prospect from Bishop Gorman (Nev.) and ended up losing the starting job to Dwayne Haskins.

Martell likely thought he was the favorite to take over as the Buckeyes quarterback once Haskins declared for the NFL Draft. But once Ohio State transfer rumors sparked about Georgia backup quarterback (and former No. 1 recruit) Justin Fields, Martell’s situation in Columbus became less secure.

In December, he posted a cryptic, now-deleted tweet that appeared to be directed at Fields. He wrote at the time:

word of advice:

———————

– don’t swing and miss

… especially not your second time

Once Fields transferred to Ohio State, Martell moved on to Miami. And now that Martell lost yet another quarterback battle, college football fans were quick to bring up that tweet — especially after that apparent shot at Fields.

Obviously, a lot can change between Week 1 and the end of the season, but Martell — at least for now — finds himself in the same position that he warned Fields about.

He swung and missed … twice.
