Tate Liverpool seeking architect for £25m 'major reimagining' project

Architects firms are being invited to bid to work with Tate Liverpool on a £25m "major reimagining" of its landmark gallery at Royal Albert Dock.

The gallery has outlined the brief for a refurbishment of its gallery and public spaces that will "enable it to thrive" for the next 30 years.

Tate Liverpool opened in 1988 and was designed by Sir James Stirling.

A statement said: "The works will transform the welcome and usability of the building, increasing the gallery’s visibility on the waterfront and within the Albert Dock, easing the transition between social and gallery environments and offering more engaging routes through the building.

"Following a grant from central Government of initial funding for this project, the gallery is seeking an architect to reimagine the gallery spaces to meet the scale and ambition of today’s most exciting artists, while creating social spaces that better connect with the city and its communities, creating an environment that is flexible and inviting and able to host people, art and ideas in equal part."

The full brief provided to firms intending to bid for the contact added: "Tate is looking to appoint a professional team to support this ambition and to bring coherent architectural and engineering response to the needs and expectations of present-day artists and visitors.

"A successful project will balance these needs with the heritage significance of Jesse Hartley’s19th century Grade I listed structure and the remnants of the 1980s Stirling Wilford conversion."

Tate Liverpool was recently awarded £10m from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund as part of a successful combined £20m bid with National Museums Liverpool for their waterfront projects.
