English conductor Jeffery Tate leads the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, Brahm’s Symphony no 3, and Delius’s Violin Concerto, played by fellow Brit, classical violinist Tasmin Little.
In the 1970s, Tate cut his teeth at Wagner’s theatre in Bayreuth, Germany, assisting on a production of Wagner’s 16-hour Ring Cycle. It fuelled his love for the German repertoire.
Tasmin Little knows Delius’s string sets intimately, after recording the BBC Symphony version with cellist Paul Walker. The Guardian said that version “seizes every opportunity to inject incisiveness and dramatic shape into the music”.
Finally Brahm’s third symphony, written while he was on holiday in a town overlooking the Rhine, ends the evening with its final chord that resembles a deep sigh.
