Tasmania, Qld Shield clash ends in draw

Tasmanian opener Tim Ward has fallen shy of completing two centuries against Queensland in their drawn Sheffield Shield game.

Ward followed his first innings 144 with 81 as Tasmania reached 3-196 in their second innings.

The captains called a halt to the game 30 minutes before the scheduled tea break on Sunday's last day of play in Adelaide.

The Tigers led by 341 runs after posting 6(dec)-500 in their first innings, with Queensland replying with 5(dec)-355.

The Bulls declared in arrears hoping they would be tasked with a last-day chase.

But Tasmania shut out any thought of a result other than a draw with middling scoring rates on Sunday at Karen Rolton Oval.

The Tigers curiously sent in fast bowler Lawrence Neil-Smith as a nightwatchman late on Saturday.

And on Sunday, Neil-Smith crawled to one run from his first 50 deliveries - the slowest scoring rate in Shield cricket in 25 years of any batsman to have faced a half-century of balls.

South Australia's Tim May didn't score from 52 balls in the domestic competition's final in 1995/96 but his stonewalling helped the Redbacks secure a draw which, in turn, delivered SA the Shield.

Neil-Smith's teammate Charlie Wakim scored just one run from his initial 47 balls on Sunday - he was dismissed for three from 61 balls.

Neil-Smith was not out on 71 from 201 balls, with leftarm spinner Matt Kuhnemann (3-61) taking all the wickets for a frustrated Queensland outfit led by Usman Khawaja, who gave himself and specialist batsman Joe Burns a bowl as the match dwindled to a draw.
