Police take a man into custody over the incident. (ABC News)

A woman who called Tasmanian police over a "prowler" in her house was still on the phone to triple-0 when officers arrived to find a different woman dead, with a man now under arrest.

Police said a woman called triple-0 about 3:00am Tuesday to report a home invader and was still on the call when officers entered the home in Main Street, Ulverstone.

The officers discovered a 23-year-old woman at the premises deceased, who according to police was a friend of the woman on the phone.

Children were also at the home at the time of the incident, police said.

Detective Inspector Kim Steven of the Devonport branch said the deceased woman's injuries were "consistent with a knife wound".

He said there appears to be "no known connection" between the deceased and the man in custody.

Police said the male in custody was from an address in the same street. He was arrested at that address at 11:00am, police said.

Detective Steven said it was believed the deceased woman travelled from interstate about two or three weeks ago and her next of kin had been notified.

The deceased woman's friend had "made a triple-0 phone call in regards to a prowler being inside her house," Detective Steven said.

The woman who alerted police was receiving counselling and support, police said.

Detective Steven said it would take "probably another 24-48 hours to process those two scenes … we'll take whatever time it needs before we make any decision on charges".

The identity of the woman has not been released.

Tasmania Police are urging anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at the time to call 131 444.
