Search for 39yo fisherman lost overboard off Flinders Island called off

The crew member was reported missing last night, and despite efforts by the crew and emergency response aircraft has not been located. (ABC News: Jessica Moran)

Tasmania Police have announced they are calling off the search for a fisherman lost overboard in waters east of Flinders Island.

The 39-year-old man from the Philippines was working aboard a fishing vessel operating out of Victoria, police said.

The man was reported missing about 8pm on Thursday and, despite efforts by the crew and emergency response aircraft, was not located.

Weather conditions hampered the air-and-sea rescue efforts by Tasmania Police and the Australian Marine Safety Authority, which were called off at about 3am on Friday after a search for the man was conducted overnight.

On Friday afternoon, police issued a statement saying they had "suspended" their search efforts.

The man's name has not been released.

Police said a report would be prepared for the coroner.
