Tasmania Police reassure public in wake of more shootings in state's north

Police say they "take these matters seriously". (ABC News: Damian McIntyre)

Bullets have been fired into two Launceston homes during separate shootings overnight.

Tasmania Police said a gun was fired at a bedroom window of a home in New Street, Invermay, about 1:00am.

Two people were home at the time and they were confronted inside by an offender.

A small amount of property was also stolen.

In a separate incident, a home in St Leonards was damaged when an offender opened fire through a front lounge-room window about 4:00am.

A small white vehicle was seen leaving the area at the time of the incident.

Tasmania Police Inspector Nathan Johnston said police did not believe the shootings were linked.

"No-one was injured in either incident," Inspector Johnston said.

There have now been over a dozen shootings in the Launceston area since the start of March.

"We are doing all we can. We want the community support and help to try and resolve these matters," Inspector Johnston said.

"We understand that there would be some concern in the community."

Inspector Johnston said police had also located a large quantity of firearms overnight at a rural location near Travellers Rest.

"Investigations into that matter are continuing," he said.

The northern firearms task force, set up earlier this year, has now seized 33 guns and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition in the past seven weeks.

"There are still more illegal firearms out there and we are committed to taking them off our streets," Inspector Johnston said.

"We need these people to come forward and provide information so we can take these illegal firearms off the street permanently."

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 131 444 or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
