Tasmania Police treating death of man found on side road as suspicious

The dead man was found by the side of Colebrook Road.

The death of a man whose body was found on the side of a road north of Hobart overnight is being treated as suspicious.

Police and ambulance officers were called to the scene on Colebrook Road, two kilometres north of Richmond, just before 6:00am on Sunday.

Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Jim Semmens said a post-mortem would be conducted tomorrow to determine the cause of the man's death.

"Preliminary enquires suggest to us that the injuries are not consistent with a hit-and-run crash scene," he said.

"Police are treating the death as suspicious and an investigation is underway."

The man is believed to be in his early 20s.

Police are appealing for members of the public to come forward if they saw any vehicles or the man on Colebrook Road late on Saturday night or early on Sunday morning.

Colebrook Road was closed between Franklin Street and Fingerpost Road for much of Sunday as forensic police investigated.

The man's family has been notified of his death.
