Tasmania Now: Tasmania second best performing economy again, Gutwein won't weigh in on euthanasia

Here's what you need to know today:

Tasmania second best performing economy

Tasmania has held onto its position as the second best performing economy in the country, the latest Commsec State of the States report shows.

Tasmania has previously had the unwanted title of Australia's worst performing economy — sitting in last place between 2014 and 2016.

But the latest report shows Tasmania's economic position remains strong on the back of strong relative population growth and high dwelling start figures.

Tasmania was only outperformed by Victoria, which lead the nation in spending, investment and construction indicators.

Gutwein won't reveal stance on end-of-life legislation

Premier Peter Gutwein isn't declaring his position on proposed voluntary assisted dying legislation until he's seen a draft bill.

Independent Upper House MP Michael Gaffney has announced he will introduce end of life legislation in the Upper House in the form of a private member's bill.

It's Mr Gaffney's fourth bid at introducing the reforms.

But Mr Gutwein isn't weighing in on his ideological position on euthanasia.

"As this is a conscience vote, I've made my position clear — that I will consider the legislation that is being proposed and I'll make up my mind and vote accordingly," he said.

Calls for greyhound racing industry overhaul

Animal welfare advocates are again calling for the state's greyhound racing industry to be overhauled, following the deaths of two animals this month.

Statistics from the Office of Racing Integrity show both greyhounds were put down due to injuries sustained at race meets in Hobart and Devonport.

Animal rights advocate Fran Chambers says three greyhounds have suffered catastrophic injuries so far this year.

"Two out of those three dogs were put down on the track, were destroyed on the track because the injuries were so bad. The third one left the track and we don't know what has happened to it," she said.

A spokesperson for Tasracing says the organisation has a "clear focus" on the prevention of track injuries, and has introduced a lure system to spread dogs further off the rail and reduce the risk of injury.

Tasmanian weather

A strong wind warning has been issued for southern coastal waters.

There are showers about the west and far south, but fine elsewhere.

Fire danger is between low and moderate today, but UV index is high.

A full and updated list of warnings can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology's Tasmanian Warnings summary webpage.

The Tasmanian Fire Service advises fire permits are currently required for the whole state of Tasmania. A fire permit can be obtained by calling 1800 000 699.
