Tasmania Now: Smoke haze covers the state, Launceston Airport drug bust

Here's what you need to know today:

Launceston Airport drug bust

A Newnham woman has been charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, along with other drug-related offences, after a routine search at the Launceston Airport yesterday.

Tasmania Police caught the 25-year-old woman during passenger screenings.

They allegedly found 112 grams of the drug ice during the search of the woman, who had travelled into the state from Melbourne.

She will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court in March.

Smoke haze lingers over the state

The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting smoke haze to remain over Tasmania for most of today.

Senior forecaster Glen Perrin says a north to north-easterly flow is bringing smoke from bushfires in Victoria and New South Wales.

"We'll see that smoke continue really through most of today before we see a southerly flow develop through Thursday morning, and that should tend to see that smoke disappear from the state," he said.

A road weather alert is current for roads in the north and north west, warning of reduced visibility due to smoke.

State loses right to host cycling championships

Oceania Cycling Championships won't be staged in the state as previously planned due to Cycling Tasmania being unable to facilitate the event.

CEO Colin Burns says a lack of Cycling Tasmania employees, volunteers and appropriate safety accreditation meant the state could not host the internationally sanctioned event this year.

"We had to not be emotional and be objective. We had to be 110 per cent sure we could deliver a safe event, and we couldn't be sure of that," he said.

The University Cycling Club's president James McKee said the event could have gone ahead if a band of four local clubs were allowed to facilitate the championships, in a proposal that had the blessing of the confederation and Cycling Australia.

"We've lost the chance for a lot of up-and-coming … athletes to mix with the big time — and for any sportsperson, that's where you get noticed," he said.

Tasmanian weather

A strong wind warning is in place for north-western, lower-eastern and south-eastern coastal waters.

Showers, possible hail and thunderstorms are also predicted for the south from about midday.

A full and updated list of warnings can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology's Tasmanian Warnings summary webpage.

The Tasmanian Fire Service advises fire permits are currently required for the whole state of Tasmania.

A fire permit can be obtained by calling 1800 000 699.
