Tasmania Now: Private hospital plan knocked back by planning committee

Here's what you need to know today:

Private hospital rejected by committee

The Hobart City Council's planning committee has rejected a proposal for a new $50 million private hospital.

The Tasman Private Hospital development in New Town would have included six operating theatres and a 24-bed overnight ward.

Council planning officers recommended the project be rejected because of the building's appearance and the potential for vehicle movements to disrupt nearby residents.

Deputy Mayor and planning committee chair Helen Burnet said it was the right call.

"The vote was 3-2 in relation to that, so it still has great concern about the impact on residential amenity, particularly the bulk and scale of the development, which effectively takes up most of the block."

Alderman Simon Behrakis voted for the development and said he was "disappointed", adding the proposed hospital "would have been of great benefit to the city".

The proposal will go before the full council next Monday.

Compo for ex-Hydro workers delayed

Former Hydro workers are concerned they will die before seeing ex-gratia payments after being exposed to cancer-causing chemicals while spraying weeds decades ago.

More than 170 people have contacted TasNetworks with fears they or a relative, may have been exposed to dangerous herbicides in the 1960s, '70s and '80s.

The workers were potentially exposed to 245-T, a herbicide linked with Agent Orange, while spraying undergrowth near powerlines decades ago.

Former worker Geoff Pratt said he was worried he will die before seeing compensation.

"I'm very concerned about it the longer they drag it out people are going to pass away," he said.

"If they pay some sort of compensation the money's not that good to someone in the lawn cemetery."

TasNetworks will not be drawn on the issue of payouts, but says of the 170 people, 50 have requested medical tests.

Weather

Showers are expected across the state today, with rain expected to clear by the evening.

A full and updated list of warnings can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology's Tasmanian Warnings summary webpage.

As of 7:00am the Pinnacle Road to the summit of Hobart's kunanyi/Mount Wellington was open at The Springs.
