Tasmania Now: Police arrest a man after shooting, and overseas tourist numbers down

Police and emergency services were called to a Tecoma Road residence at 4:30am.

Here's what you need to know today:

Man shot in Risdon Vale

Police have arrested a man after a firearms incident at Risdon Vale this morning.

Police and emergency services were called to a Tecoma Road residence at 4:30am following a report of a firearm incident during which a man received a wound to his arm.

Ambulance Tasmania attended the scene, but his injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

The alleged offender left the scene but police arrested him later.

Police say the parties are believed to be known to one another.

Fewer overseas tourists visit

Tasmania's tourism boom appears to be going bust with new data showing fewer people from overseas are visiting the state.

New figures from Tourism Research Australia show the number of international tourists to visit Tasmania dropped 1.6 per cent in the year to June.

Visitor nights dropped 14 per cent, and average expenditure was down 3 per cent.

Tourism Industry Council Tasmania chief executive Luke Martin says the figures come off the back of strong growth.

"There's a little bit of a headwind ahead, particularly out of Asia, and this is something that's happening in Australia across the country," he said.

Data from Tourism Tasmania released last week also showed a drop in the number of people visiting the state for a holiday.

Purchase price of Waratah Hotel revealed

Tasmania's Housing Minister Roger Jaensch said the State Government paid $5.3 million to buy the Waratah Hotel in Hobart.

The purchase settled at the end of September, after the Government announced it was buying the pub in August.

Mr Jaensch says plans to refurbish the site into 24 en suite units for supported accommodation are now being finalised.

A Development Application will then be submitted to the Hobart City Council, and the facility is due to open next year.

Platypus counting on help

Tasmanians are being encouraged to take part in a platypus monitoring study, to get a better hold on numbers in the state's north.

The program will involve trained volunteers visiting several waterways and rivers at frequent intervals, to record any observations and their locations.

This data will then be calculated to try to plot population trends.

Biologist Geoff Williams from the Australian Platypus Conservancy says the study is vital, with the animal currently considered a "near-threatened species".

"What we do know is that in many places platypus numbers have gone down quite significantly and that there is evidence in areas that they're continuing to decline," he said.

Weather

There are showers about the west, south and north-east, extending statewide during the afternoon.

Light winds and afternoon sea breezes are tending east to south-easterly in the evening.

A full and updated list of warnings can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology's Tasmanian Warnings summary webpage.

As of 6:00am the Pinnacle Road to the summit of Hobart's kunanyi/Mount Wellington was closed at The Springs.

Check the council website for the updated status of Pinnacle Road.
