Tasmania Now: Murdered tattooist trial begins and Temco jobs threatened

Here's what you need to know today:

Tattoo artist alleged murder trial begins

A Supreme Court trial has begun in Hobart over the alleged murder of a southern Tasmanian tattoo artist who was shot more than two years ago.

Dwayne 'Doc' Davies, 47, was shot at close range in the head and back at Elderslie in Tasmania's Southern Midlands in May 2017.

Mr Davies's wife Margaret Anne Otto and her ex-lover Bradley Scott Purkiss have been charged with his murder and both are facing trial.

Crown Prosecutor Madeleine Wilson yesterday told Chief Justice Allan Blow the trial will hear from both defendants and is expected to run for six weeks.

Hundreds of Temco jobs at risk

The future of 300 jobs at the Temco manganese smelter in northern Tasmania remains unclear with the operator, South 32, undergoing a review of the plant due to a shift in global markets.

The State Government has not committed to any incentives to keep the global mining and metals company operating out of Bell Bay.

Premier Will Hodgman said he was hopeful the plant would remain within the state.

"We're in the process of discussing with the company what their needs are. Of course, at any point in time that any government assistance is provided, we will announce that or state that publicly but we've not made such commitments," he said.

The Federal Government is considering a skills package for workers if the smelter closes.

Penguin deaths caused by dogs

An examination of penguin carcasses has found the fatal injuries are consistent with a dog attack after 42 dead penguins were found at Doctors Rock near Wynyard last week.

There have been seven attacks on little penguin colonies in Tasmania's north and north-west since the middle of last year.

The Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment said a small number of orphaned chicks were also found.

Investigations into the deaths are continuing.

Weather

There is a strong wind warning for the south-west coast from South East Cape to Low Rocky Point.

Light showers are clearing during the morning, showers will redevelop in the west during the evening.

A full and updated list of warnings can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology's Tasmanian Warnings summary webpage.

As of 6:30am the Pinnacle Road to the summit of Hobart's kunanyi/Mount Wellington was closed at The Springs.

Check the council website for the updated status of Pinnacle Road.
