Tasmania Now: Injuries caused by drugs, alcohol clog up EDs, senior doctor says

Here's what you need to know today:

Change drink laws, doctor says

A senior doctor at the Royal Hobart Hospital wants the Tasmanian Government to consider changing liquor licensing laws to ease pressure on emergency departments.

Royal Hobart Hospital Association chairman Frank Nicklason said a high number of people come to emergency departments with injuries caused by alcohol and drugs.

He said reducing the number of liquor licences issued, and the hours and volume of alcohol sales, would help.

"Some changes in public policy that are relatively straightforward could be effective, could make a big difference, like liquor licensing laws and lockout times.

"In the setting of what we're dealing with now, it's all the more reason to act on that," Dr Nicklason said.

The Government has said the liquor licensing system was "well regulated" and independently overseen, and took into account the best interests of the community.

Man arrested over fire in state's north

Police have arrested a 20-year-old man from Mayfield whom they say started a bushfire at Lulworth, near Bridport, on Tasmania's north coast.

As of Monday morning the fire was "being controlled", and had burnt through 194 hectares, the Tasmania Fire Service said.

Another fire, at nearby Lefroy, had burnt across 45 hectares and as of Sunday night was classed as "going", with Parks and Wildlife fire crews attending.

Nearby residents are being urged to keep an eye on the Tasmania Fire Service alerts list and to check their bushfire survival plans.

Fire has also damaged a shack at Ulverstone in the state's north overnight.

Crews from Ulverstone, Devonport and Forth went to the shack on Beach Road about 6:30pm and managed to quickly containing the blaze. The damage bill is not yet known.

March against violence

Hundreds of people are expected to march in Hobart this afternoon in the annual walk supporting the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Members of the community will be joined by government departments for the walk from St David's Park towards Parliament.

There will also be a collection point on the Parliament Lawns for everyday essentials like shampoo and toothpaste to help Tasmanian women in crisis.
