Tasmania Now: Watch and act fire alerts for two blazes north of Hobart

Here's what you need to know today:

Fire alerts north of Hobart

The Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) has issued watch-and-act alerts for uncontrolled bushfires north of Hobart.

The fires burning at Elderslie and Lachlan could put the area at high risk in the next four hours.

On a day of total fire bans in the state's south, the TFS has been called out to several fires, including one at Electrona south of Hobart which is now at advice level.

Non-residents have been asked to stay away and people are advised to stay updated by listening to ABC Local Radio or by visiting the TFS website, www.fire.tas.gov.au

An earlier threat from a bushfire fire at Scamander on Tasmania's east coast is over for now.

An advice level alert has been issued for a fire at Electrona, south of Hobart, but the TFS said there was no immediate threat.

Jewish group wants Nazi memorabilia sales banned

A group representing the Jewish community has renewed calls for the State Government to ban the sale of Nazi memorabilia in Tasmania.

Launceston's Armitage Auctions will on Wednesday auction off more than 60 items of German war memorabilia, including several pieces featuring a swastika.

The chairman of the Anti-Defamation Commission, Dr Dvir Abramovich said he was shocked to see so many items for sale, calling it "perverse and twisted".

"These are objects and items that are part of history's darkest period that were used by those to murder men, women and children and we can not be party to anything that glorifies and celebrates this evil ideology," he said.

170 yachts to set sail in Sydney-Hobart

The largest fleet in 25 years has signed up for this year's Sydney-Hobart yacht race.

At the close of entries for the 75th anniversary of the iconic race, the final tally was 170 competitors.

The fleet will be the fourth largest in the history of the race and the strongest since a record 371 yachts raced in 1994.

Five super-maxis will compete for line honours, with Comanche, Black Jack, SHK Scallywag and InfoTrack competing against last year's winner, Wild Oats XI.

For the first time, an all-Aboriginal crew will compete, sailing on Tribal Warrior.

Weather

The forecast for Tasmania is fine until showers develop about the west in the afternoon, extending to the south during the evening.

There's a fire weather warning for the South East, East coast, Midlands and the Upper Derwent Valley.

There's a gale warning for southern coastal waters from South East Cape to Low Rocky Point, for west to north-westerly winds.

There's a strong wind warning for remaining eastern and western coastal waters from the northern tip of Flinders Island to Sandy Cape.

And a strong wind warning for the South West and the Central Plateau lakes.
