Tasmania Now: Not guilty in Launceston shooting case

The report said extensive damage had been done to the TWWHA by bushfires in recent years.

Here's what you need to know today:

Not guilty in Launceston shooting case

A jury has found Marcus John Williams and Jacob Adam Williams not guilty after a shooting in Launceston earlier this year.

Both men had pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and aggravated armed robbery after a shooting in Kings Meadows.

The court heard Kurt Jenkins was shot in the leg two days after an alleged petrol dousing and robbery at the home of one of the accused men's partners.

The prosecution argued Mr Jenkins was shot in retribution for the alleged petrol dousing, which Mr Jenkins denied being a part of.

The defence claimed Mr Jenkins shot himself in the leg during a struggle.

After six hours of deliberations the jury returned a majority not guilty verdict for both charges.

No go for new hospital

A $50 million proposal for a new private hospital in Hobart's northern suburbs has been officially rejected by the city council, following its planning committee's knockback.

The Tasman Private Hospital development in New Town included plans for six operating theatres and a 24-bed overnight ward.

The council's planning committee earlier voted to reject the proposal last week because of the building's appearance and the potential for vehicle movements to disrupt nearby residents.

Climate change biggest threat to world heritage area

A long-awaited report on the management of Tasmania's Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA) has found the biggest threat to its ongoing protection is climate change.

The report, prepared by the Federal Department of Environment and Energy in cooperation with the Tasmanian Government, was delivered to UNESCO yesterday as part of Australia's obligation to provide information on action taken to protect and sustain the World Heritage Area.

"Fire is one of the greatest challenges for the management of the property, particularly in the context of a changing climate," the report said

It goes on to acknowledge that according to climate change projections, increased frequency of fires and longer fire seasons are likely.

"This report confirms that over 100,000 hectares have been burnt in two sets of fires … and these fires burnt extremely sensitive vegetation … ancient life forms such as Huon pine, King Billy pine and giant eucalypt trees which will not recover or which might take generation upon generation to recover," Tasmanian conservationist Geoff Law said.

New case of meningococcal disease

A 22-year-old man remains in hospital in Tasmania's north-west after being diagnosed with meningococcal B.

The case was confirmed late last week and since then the man's relatives have received precautionary antibiotics.

He is in a stable condition. It is the sixth case of meningococcal disease to have been confirmed in Tasmania this year.

Four have been meningococcal B disease, the other two were the W strain.

Weather

The forecast for Tasmania is for showers and cold conditions in the south-west.

In the highland, rain and snow is predicted, with showers, cold conditions in the south-east. Windy, cool-to-cold in the northwest. Showers increasing, cold in the north-east.

As of 6:00am the Pinnacle Road to the summit of Hobart's kunanyi/Mount Wellington was closed at The Springs.

Check the council website for the updated status of Pinnacle Road.
