Tasmania Now: 81yo man rescued from mountain

The 81-year old man was rescued after getting stuck in thick vegetation on the cap.

Here's what you need to know today:

Man rescued from Collins Cap

An 81-year-old man has been rescued after getting lost while walking on Collins Cap near Collinsvale in Tasmania's south yesterday evening.

The man had reached the summit and was walking back when he found himself in thick vegetation he couldn't get through, so called police.

Paramedics aboard the rescue helicopter found the man was cold but uninjured.

He was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital for observation.

Police reminded bushwalkers to carry personal locator beacons, even on short day walks.

Motorists urge to plan Australia Day trips

Tasmanian motorists are being urged to plan their driving over the Australia Day long weekend to avoid fatigue and distraction.

Garry Bailey from the Road Safety Advisory Council says if drivers feel tired, they should pull over and rest or ask someone else to take over driving.

"Fatigue contributes to distraction, and distraction is involved in something like 24 per cent of serious and fatal crashes," he said.

Mr Bailey said people should plan their trips so they don't feel compelled to drive unsafely.

State Emergency Service volunteers will be operating driver reviver sites with free tea and coffee on the Midland, Tasman, Bass, Murchison and Lyell Highways.

Tasmanian weather

The state forecast for today is mainly fine about the central east, with showers elsewhere easing this afternoon.
