Twenty-two patients with COVID are in hospital in Tasmania, eight of them for COVID symptoms, as the state records 1,583 new cases of the virus.

The state's total of active cases has reached 8,764, with 731 people released from quarantine in the last 24 hours.

Of all cases, 847 were identified through rapid antigen tests, and 736 through PCR tests.

Just under 10,500 rapid antigen tests were distributed in the past 24 hours.

A total of 4,795 people are listed as having recovered from the disease.

Thirteen people have died from illness attributed to coronavirus in Tasmania since 2020.

Tasmania's COVID cases have been increasing since the December 15 border opening, with the state's health commander yesterday confirming she had tested positive to COVID.

Kathrine Morgan-Wicks said she was asymptomatic, but found out she had the virus when taking a PCR test, after a household member was confirmed as a positive case.

"I am currently well and will continue in my role as Secretary and State Health Commander, working in isolation from home," she said on Tuesday.
