Tasmania have grafted their way to 1-63 at lunch on the opening day of their Sheffield Shield clash against NSW at Bellerive Oval.

After being sent in on Saturday, the Tigers blunted a strong Blues' pace attack, only losing opener Jordan Silk for 10.

Charlie Wakim (28 from 79 balls) and Matthew Wade (25 from 70) will resume after the break, with the Tigers travelling at 2.17 runs an over.

Trent Copeland (1-27) had Silk edging to wicketkeeper Peter Nevill after 30 minutes of play.

Wade, playing his first Shield match since the Test series against India, picked up the pace late in the session, hitting Harry Conway for several boundaries through the off-side.

Test quick Mitchell Starc went wicketless from six overs, while Nathan Lyon bowled just two overs.

The Tigers, chasing their first win of the Shield season, are without the injured Ben McDermott and Nathan Ellis.

The second-placed Blues have rested David Warner, Josh Hazlewood and Moises Henriques but welcome back Daniel Hughes, who missed their last match with a shoulder problem.
