Tasman Island lighthouse volunteers 'rapt' at crowdfunding campaign

The first ever attempt at crowdfunding for one of Australia's wildest islands has exceeded its goal.

The Friends of Tasman Island group has raised $20,000 for conservation works on the island's iconic lighthouse buildings.

The group's president, Carol Jackson, said the funds would go towards building materials and transport costs.

"It was our first foray into crowdfunding so we're absolutely rapt it was successful," Ms Jackson said.

The group will restore a sunroom and veranda at one of the three lighthouse keeper's quarters at the end of the month.

It is a building Ms Jackson was almost born in.

"Quarters number two means a lot to me," she said.

Ms Jackson's personal attachment to the island comes from her time living there as a child.

Her father was a lighthouse keeper, and the family spent seven years on Tasman Island.

The island has 250 metre cliffs, and can now only be accessed by helicopter, making transport costs expensive.

The group, a branch of Wildcare, previously relied on the sale of a calendar for its major fundraising activity.

"We thought 'well let's try the modern way of fundraising'," Ms Jackson said.

"It was a bit nerve wracking."

About $16,000 was needed for the conservation works.

"Over the last 11 years we've had 25 working bees, this is our 26th," she said.

"We've actually stopped the deterioration of the three lighthouse keeper's quarters, restored the oil store building and we started work restoring the houses."

The Tasman Island lighthouse was built in 1906 and it sits at 276 metres above sea level, making it the highest operating lighthouse in Australia.
