MIAMI _ Three people are in custody and up to three more remain at large after an attempted traffic stop early Friday resulted in a shootout in which a Miami police officer's Taser belt may have saved her from a bullet wound.
Miami police told South Florida news outlets that it was about 2 a.m. when the officer was conducting traffic stop in the area of Northwest 22nd Avenue and 54th Street and the occupants of a Dodge Charger started firing at the officer.
The targeted officer is doing well, Deputy Miami Police Chief Ronald Papier said in comments broadcast on WSVN-Ch. 7.
"She was not struck, however, her Taser, which she was wearing on her gun belt, was struck by one of the rounds. Several of the rounds came very close to striking her, and struck her car," Papier said.
According to police, one of the men in the now-bullet riddled Charger was grazed by gunfire and taken to a hospital. Two others were taken into custody and the search is continuing for the car's other occupants.
A heavy police presence remains in the neighborhood where the shooting happened and people are being asked to avoid that part of northwest Miami.
