A sailor has been rescued after his 25-foot yacht was buffeted by wild weather off the west coast of Tasmania.

The 76-year-old Zeehan man activated his emergency beacon late on Friday night after high winds and heavy seas rocked his vessel.

A jet was sent from Melbourne and spotted the yacht six nautical miles off Point Hibbs, about 25 nautical miles south of Macquarie Harbour.

He was rescued by helicopter without incident, while a fishing boat towed the yacht to Point Hibbs.

Tasmania Police Acting Inspector Anthea Maingay urged yachtsmen and women planning trips to be aware of the weather conditions and ensure their vessel has enough fuel and equipment, and is in good working order.
